Thrifty fashionistas compare an $18 Kmart bag to a $4,700 accessory from one of the world’s most famous designers
- A fashion blogger spotted a Kmart bag that looks similar to a designer favourite
- The $18 checkered handbag is an affordable version of Dior’s iconic book tote
- But with prices starting from a staggering $4,700, it’s well out of most budgets
Thrifty fashionistas are comparing a Kmart shopping bag to one of the world’s most iconic designer totes.
The Australian retailer’s $18 Canvas Carry Tote looks somewhat similar to the wildly popular Dior ‘Book Tote’, a large canvas bag emblazoned across the middle with the founder’s name: ‘Christian Dior’.
But with prices starting from an eye-watering $4,700, the on-trend accessory is thousands out of most shoppers’ budgets.
Brisbane fashion blogger ‘Kmart Fever’ was the first to share an Instagram post about the bargain dupe, saying it reminded her of ‘that super high-end bag’ from the prestigious Parisian fashion house.

‘It has an awesome feel to it and can be styled well with anything. It’s a great size too – perfect for work or uni, or even a trip to the markets!’ she wrote.
‘My laptop fits in it and it’s durable, which is what I always look for.’
Photos of the affordable alternative, which is available to order from Kmart’s website, quickly sparked delighted responses.
‘Obsessed with this bag!’ one woman replied, while a second simply wrote ‘wow’.
A third said she loved the piece but wishes there was a smaller version which would be more versatile for dinners out and nights on the town.

Others called it the perfect buy for spring and summer.
And it’s not the first time an Australian discount store has been hard on the heels of the hottest designer trends this year.
Last month, Best & Less launched a stylish spring dress that looks remarkably similar to a frock four times the price.
The $28 floral peasant dress is a bargain dupe of a tunic from upscale label Spell, which is currently reduced from $229 to $115.

Both dresses have three-quarter length ruffle sleeves and a loose-fitting silhouette that’s perfect for warmer weather, but at less than a quarter of the price it’s hard to look past the Best and Less version.
Spell, a favourite of Chris Hemsworth’s wife Elsa Pataky, has already sold out of its tunic in every size except XXS, while Best and Less still have stock of sizes 8 to 16.
The website is filled with a range of trendy bohemian print pieces ideal for spring, including a $35 floral maxi-dress with a tiered skirt and dainty straps that lace up over the shoulders.
There’s also a chic gingham print dress with a sweetheart neckline and a slit up one leg for $28, a style that could easily take you from a casual day at the park to an evening at a bar once lockdown is lifted.
