Australian singer Troye Sivan was targeted by an online predator

Troye Sivan has revealed he was only a teenager when a man online became ‘inappropriate’ with him.

The 22-year-old began his career by making YouTube videos and was still a child when a man, claiming to be a talent manager, approached him on the internet.

The pair spoke over the video chatting app Skype, which was when the Australian singer says things became uncomfortable.

‘I was so naive about everything and about the industry,’ the My My My! singer told The Sydney Morning Herald.

‘I had no idea how to check if someone was legit or not. [He] promised the world to me and then as we got closer just completely inappropriately, you know, started … everything changed all of a sudden. It was super weird,’ he added.

Troye told his parents of the exchange, and he cut contact with the man, who he tells the paper that he one day ran into in Los Angeles by chance.

The star’s career has going from strength to strength and on Tuesday, he attended the Teen Choice awards.

Over the past six months, the South African-born Australian singer has performed with Taylor Swift and collaborated with Ariana Grande on the song Dance To This, the fourth single from his solo album Bloom.

But there was a moment in his life when Troye wondered if he was about to lose it all.

In 2013, then aged just 17, the singer took to YouTube to tell his sizable online audience that he’s gay, fearing it meant he’d lose his record deal and female fans.

As he told Andrew Denton on the Interview program recently, Troye felt he had ‘no choice’ but to disclose who he really was.

He said: ‘The alternative was just unthinkable to me at that point. I could not stay in the closet any longer. It was suffocating. [It was] really, really terrifying, but what other choice do I have? I’m gonna do this, I have to do this’.
