An Australian woman is in hospital after flipping her car in a horrifying accident in Bali.

Benedicte Hansen, 56, and her partner Kim Shaw, 59, were driving on a steep road in the island’s north on Monday afternoon, 9 News reported.

The Perth couple were on route to Lake Temple when their car started slipping down the road.

The vehicle slid 17 metres, then flipped.

Ms Hansen was a passenger in the car at the time of the accident.

She is in the intensive care unit at Kuta Hospital for head injuries and multiple fractures.

Her hand and ribs will need surgery, but it is unknown whether the pair will return to Australia for treatment.

Mr Shaw escaped with minor injuries.

The couple run a villa in Bali near Ubud.
