Matthew Richard Woods could be jailed for seven years if found guilty of snatching a Canadian woman’s bag in Bali’s Canggu on June 19.

‘I did not do it. I did not do it,’ the 24-year-old carpenter told 7NEWS as he left a police truck to enter the jail.

Woods was interviewed earlier by prosecutors in which he once again denied stealing the 20-year-old woman’s bag.

‘I never, not once,’ he said.

Woods allegedly stole a bag from a woman before making a getaway with a partner on a motorcycle on Fisherman Ring Road at 10pm.

A handcuffed Woods cried and hung his head when he was displayed in front of local media by police in Kuta on June 28.

‘Look at me, look at me,’ a cameraman said in a video of the press conference.

Police laughed as the accused bag snatcher tried to avoid the camera by curling up behind the table.

‘The perpetrators were shouted at by residents. Incidentally there was a police officer carrying out a patrol there, so he escaped the tantrums of the time,’ Police Chief I Dewa Putu Gede Anom told the Bali Express.

Woods was taken into custody by police after local residents made a citizens arrest and handed him over.

A yellow bag with a gold iPhone X and Rp. 244,000 (AUD $25) were seized as evidence.

The 24-year-old had been on holiday in Bali for the last month before he was arrested.

Woods, if found guilty, now faces a maximum punishment of seven years in prison under Indonesia’s Article 363 pertaining to theft committed by two or more people.

His motorcycle partner is reportedly still on the run.
