A vegan has called for people to stop taking the crucial flu jab as the vaccine is made using animal products.
The influenza vaccine distributed in Australia and New Zealand is grown as a virus in the yolk of fertilised hen eggs.
The amount of egg protein in each dose of vaccine is estimated to be just one microgram, but an animal activist has argued that is enough to keep them away from children.

One vegan on the Reddit thread r/Ask Vegans urged other vegans to re-think their stance on taking vaccines.
‘The vaccine only works on a few select strains, these are not necessarily the ones that could infect you,’ they wrote.
‘Have a think about whether you really need a flu vaccine in the first place.
In another post shared to an Australian vegan Facebook group, one vegan campaigner claimed the blood from unborn calves were being used for vaccines.
‘Vaccines aren’t vegan – never have been,’ the activist wrote.
Alongside the caption she shared a picture of what appeared to be a calf with a needle through its heart.

In another post shared to an Australian vegan Facebook group, one vegan campaigner claimed the blood from unborn calves were being used for vaccines – but was met with a strong response (pictured)
‘When pregnant cows are slaughtered they put a needle in the heart of the un-born calf to drain his blood for vaccines,’ the post read.
But many people in the group disagreed with her stance.
‘Anti-vaxxers need to speak to people who lost loved ones to polio before the vaccine, or people who were left with permanent disabilities,’ one person wrote.
‘How come every anti-vaxxer claims to have tons of peer-reviewed studies but never actually links any?’ another said.
Daily Mail Australia has contacted the person who claimed calf blood was being used in vaccines for comment.
