Australian woman’s two-word excuse for allegedly stealing two laptops from a Bali shop – as she’s thrown back into hellhole prison

The Australian woman charged with stealing two bags containing laptops in Bali has blamed ‘pain medication’ for her alleged actions after it was suggested in court that she was drunk when arrested.

Vanessa Louise Crimmins, 45, is accused of stealing bags containing a HP laptop and a MacBook Air from outside Popular Deli, a supermarket in North Kuta on October 30.

Ms Crimmins, who did not have legal representation, attended Denpasar District Court on Thursday where she heard charges read against her and witness testimony of the alleged thefts.

Police and a store security chief also alleged when they went to arrest Ms Crimmins she appeared ‘drunk’.

‘We could not communicate with her,’ the security chief told the court.

‘She like drunk or something, not sure. She was later pretending to sleep.’

Police also claimed there were a number of empty beer bottles around Ms Crimmins.

As the hearing was wrapping up, a journalist approached Ms Crimmins and asked whether she ‘reaslied what she did’ and if she was under the influence of alcohol.

‘No, pain medication,’ Ms Crimmins replied.

When asked if she felt ‘sorry for what she did’ Ms Crimmins replied ‘very’.

Earlier when she was being led into court Ms Crimmins also replied to journalists attempting to question her, although at other times she attempted to hide her face behind a pink fan.

‘I didn’t do anything wrong,’ she said.

‘Big mistake, big mistake.’

During the hearing prosecutor Lintang Jendro Rahmadita read the indictment which saw Ms Crimmins charged with article 362 of Criminal Code on theft, which could land her a maximum sentence of five years in jail.

The court heard from several witnesses, including the owners of the allegedly stolen laptops, Jakarta man Ardi Nurcahyadi, 42, and Denpasar university student Ni Nyoman Ari Purwaningsih, 24.

Both the bags were allegedly stolen in a 90-minute period from 7.30am after being left outside the store.

After one of the men alerted the Popular Deli security chief that their bag had been taken, he reviewed the CCTV footage.

It allegedly showed Ms Crimmins taking the man’s bag and then a second one about an hour later from outside the shop.

Police alleged that after arresting Ms Crimmins they conducted a search of the North Kuta villa where was staying which turned up the stolen bags and computers.

Ms Crimmins, who works as a teacher, is scheduled to next face court on January 23, where she give a statement.

It remains unclear whether Ms Crimmins was residing in Bali or just visiting.

After the hearing she was taken back to Bali’s infamous Kerobokan jail.

Up until recently the prison held two members of the Bali Nine drug smuggling ring.

Si Yi Chen and Matthew Norman served out their sentences at Kerobokan before they returned to Australia earlier this month.

Bali Nine ringleaders Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran also spent their sentences on Kerobokan’s death row before were executed in 2015.

It’s also where fellow Aussie Schapelle Corby served the majority of her nine-year jail term after she attempted smuggling 4.1kg of marijuana in her bodyboard bag through Denpasar Airport in 2004.
