Australians are going to Bali to get tattoos due to the high costs Down Under

More Australians are opting for tattoos for a permanent reminder of their time abroad – with 20 per cent claiming they did so due to the high price of getting inked Down Under.

One in three Australians have gone under the needle overseas while 37 per cent have considered doing so, according to research from Hostelworld.

Of the people who have already been inked overseas, 57 per cent would consider getting another design on their next trip, Travel Weekly reported.

A third of Australians said their international tattoo was spontaneous, while another 20 per cent they got their work overseas done because it was cheaper than doing so in Australia.

An 18-year-old, known only as Katie, told 10 Daily the ink she got in Cambodia was cheaper than having it done in Australia, despite the high cost of the airfare.

‘It’s actually cheaper to get the plane ticket from Melbourne and get a tattoo here [Siem Reap, Cambodia] than it is to get the tattoo at home,’ she said.

Gold Coast man Dane Herden set up a Celebrity Ink franchise in Bali two years ago, he told Sydney Morning Herald.

He said in Australia top artists could charge up to $300 per hour but his studio charges per piece.

He said clients can spend anywhere between $80 to $3,500 on a tattoo.

One of his clients was quoted $7,000 for a full sleeve tattoo in Australia, but Herden quoted him $2,500.

‘So he flew over in business class, stayed in Hard Rock, had lobsters on the beach, stayed for four or five nights and got tattoos for the last three days … he gets a better tattoo faster and the fancy holiday for the same amount he would’ve had to spend in Australia,’ he told the publication.

Almost 60 per cent plan their tattoos before they go overseas and another 11 per cent alter their travel to book in time with a specific artist.

‘It’s not just a piece of art you put on a wall, it’s my history,’ she said.

‘My favourite is the tattoo of an eye on my chest. I drew it myself and it represents awakening and kindness. It’s on my heart and always reminds me of travelling. I got it in Vietnam in 1984 and it’s my favourite tattoo,’ she said.

However Bali remains the favoured spot for Australians to get their tattoos.

Below the inking it reads ‘Baby’, with Susie also getting an italic ‘B’ behind her ear.

One of the most popular places to get a tattoo overseas is a hostel called The Yellow in Rome, Italy.

The hostel has a partnership with a parlour and once you pick your design, your chosen artist comes to the hostel to tattoo you.
