It’s the iconic pastry food loved by many.

And Australia’s Best Pie has been announced after eight judges tasted more than 1,700 pies and pasties – and it’s far from the humble meat creation.

Giving tradition a twist, the Satay Seafood Pie from Country Cob Bakery in Victoria’s Kyneton has taken out the official 2018 prestigious title.

The pastry chef behind the unique creation – Chan Khun who moved to Australia from Cambodia in 2004 – said you don’t need tomato sauce to enjoy his winning pie.

The bakery owner said learning the ‘Australian way to make a pie’ was challenging and so he was delighted to win the official award.

And it isn’t the first time Mr Khun has won an award. Last year, the country’s best plain mince pie went to his Country Cob Bakery.

Held by the Baking Association of Australia, pie connoisseurs tasted hundreds of pastries and pies around the country over the two-day annual event. 

The Orange Spot Bakery in South Australia’s Glenelg won the 2018 Australia’s Best Pastie award with its 3 Pepper Pastie.

The famous pasties are filled with pumpkin, potato, onion, roasted marinated capsicum, green peppercorns, Angus beef and pepper steak seasoning.

The Australia’s Best Pie and Pastie Competition is the only industry based and conducted at the Baking Trade Show in the southern hemisphere.

The official winners were announced on Thursday afternoon at the event on the Gold Coast in Queensland.
