Australia’s most notorious serial killer Ivan Milat dies from cancer in prison aged 74 while serving seven life sentences for deaths of backpackers and hitch-hikers

Serial killer Ivan Milat, who murdered seven backpackers and hitch-hikers between 1989 and 1993, has died in prison at the age of 74.

Milat, who was also suspected of being responsible for the deaths of several other people but never confessed to them, passed away at 4am on Sunday morning in Sydney’s Long Bay jail, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Milat had been taken from prison in May to be treated in hospital for cancer of the oesophagus  and stomach before later being returned to the hospital wing of the jail.

The cancer has spread to his liver, lungs, bones and lymph nodes, and he developed fluid on his heart. 

Milat was serving seven life sentences for the murder of seven backpackers in bushland south of Sydney.

The 74-year-old was convicted in 1996 for the murder of seven backpackers in the Belanglo State Forest, south of Sydney, between 1989 and 1992.

He was serving seven life sentences for the killings but always maintained his innocence.
