Avalanche sweeps away hikers on Swiss mountain

An avalanche has swept away at least 10 hikers on a mountain in Switzerland.

Local police say it occurred in the Valais canton, which borders France and Italy.

They were reportedly carried away 2,500 metres high-up in an area called the Col de Fenestral. 

A search for the missing has began. 

An avalanche has swept away at least 10 hikers in the Swiss canton of Valais 

A police spokesman said: ‘The rescuers are on site and we are waiting for information.’

Authorities said there had been several avalanches in that area today and one person has been hospitalised.
