Avengers: Infinity War smashes box office record with $250M, passing ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Avengers: Infinity War smashed it’s way to a record $250 million in ticket sales over the weekend.

The box office receipts narrowly surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens for the highest opening weekend of all-time.

Accounting for inflation, the Star Wars reboot would still reign with about $260 million in 2018 dollars, but Infinity War also set a new global opening record with $630 million.

And the Marvel superhero romp has yet to open in China, the world’s second-largest movie market. 

It opens there May 11. The Fate of the Furious previously held the worldwide mark with $541.9 million.

In a very distant second place was John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place with $10.7 million.

Infinity War had the pull of big name actors playing their superhero counterparts such as Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, Chris Evans’ Captain America, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther.

The action blockbuster has been in the works for over a decade combining a vast work of characters and story lines from the Marvel universe. 

The movies such as Iron Man, Thor, and Balck Panther have brought in roughly $15.3 billion globally.

Infinity War was also a critical darling with a 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The studio is set to release the next installment of Avengers in 2019.

Meanwhile, the last edition of the Star Wars reboot trilogy will also bow in 2019.
