Average Briton spends 10,000 minutes a year complaining

We’re a nation of moaners! New survey finds average Briton spends 10,000 minutes a year complaining

  • Two in three Brits in 20s and 30s find something to complain about once a day
  • Millennials’ moans are about lack of sleep, trouble at work and bad service
  • Four in ten people even complain about the amount of complaining by others

Politics, the weather, traffic, bad customer service, snoring partners – you name it and we British can moan about it.

A survey has found that on average, we spend 10,000 minutes a year whinging, or the equivalent of nearly an entire week.

And it turns out the biggest culprits are not as might be expected grumpy old men, but millennials.

Two in three Britons in their 20s and 30s find something to complain about at least once a day, with a typical outburst lasting a full 15 minutes, researchers found.

Millennials’ moans are chiefly about lack of sleep, trouble at work and bad service in restaurants and coffee bars. If they did all their complaining in one block, each would go on for 24 hours a day for more than ten days. The whining lasts one and a half times that of the average Briton and two and a half times that of the country’s most patient group, the over-55s.

The survey for Privilege Car Insurance also broke down moaning by gender and found women are most likely to complain about money, health and their weight, while men will sound off about politics and football.

Women are also less happy with men than the other way around, with nearly all finding something irritating in a male partner, snoring being one of the most common gripes.

Four in ten people even complain about the amount of complaining by others – with one in four hating it so much they are prepared to moan about it to them.

Charlotte Fielding of Privilege said: ‘We wanted to understand whether we still fall into the stereotype of being a whingy nation. These findings reveal that the top things we tend to moan about are the weather and politics – no surprises there.

‘While a good moan can sometimes help to let off steam, we think it’s important to try to live as stress-free as possible.’
