Axe blow to the head at medieval festival sees man, 21, flown to hospital after the blade smashed through his helmet

  • An axe penetrated his helmet at the Winterfest Sydney Medieval Fair on Saturday
  • He was treated by paramedics and CareFlight at showground just before 11am
  • He has been taken to Westmead Hospital, Sydney’s west, in a stable condition

A 21-year-old man has suffered an axe blow to the head during a re-enactment battle at a medieval festival. 

The blade smashed through his helmet during the mock battle at the Hawkesbury Showground, in western Sydney, on Saturday morning. 

The man, who travelled from Victoria for the Winterfest Sydney Medieval Fair, suffered lacerations to his head from the impact.

He was assisted by NSW Ambulance paramedics and CareFlight’s rapid response rescue helicopter just before 11am.  

The CareFlight specialist doctor and critical care paramedic gave additional treatment before he boarded the helicopter.

He has been flown to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

Winterfest Sydney Medieval Fair, held on Saturday and Sunday this weekend, offers jousting, archery and combat as well as crafts, cooking, games and entertainment. 

Festivalgoers are encouraged to dress-up in medieval attire for the fair.
