Baby boy is fighting for his life in hospital after he was thrown into a river from a bridge as a man is arrested for attempted murder

A baby boy is fighting for his life in hospital after he was thrown into a river from a bridge – as a man is arrested for attempted murder.

The child was rescued by firefighters with the support of a police helicopter, after being found in the River Irwell, in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester.

The youngster, whose age has not been confirmed, was given first aid at the scene before being rushed to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Eyewitnesses said that two fire engines, ambulances, multiple police vehicles and the GMP force helicopter were at the area.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police said: ‘Shortly before 4.25pm today (Wednesday 11 September 2019), police were called to reports that a child was in the River Irwell.

‘Emergency services attended and with the support of the police helicopter the child was retrieved and taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

‘A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He remains in custody for questioning.

‘Blackburn Street is currently closed at the junctions with Stand Lane and Radcliffe New Road.

‘An investigation is underway and enquiries are ongoing.
