A four-month-old boy has been rushed to hospital with critical facial injuries after allegedly being slashed with a knife by his grandmother in Brisbane.

The attack is being treated as a ‘domestic’ incident, Queensland Police Inspector Daniel Bragg told reporters.

Police were called to a house on Ridgeway Street in The Gap at 6.45am on Tuesday, following reports of an assault.

The boy’s mother, who was visiting the home with her baby, was woken just after 6am by the sound of her child crying in his cot.

‘The mother found the child in a distressed state with injuries to his face,’ Inspector Bragg said.

The mother allegedly found the boy’s grandmother near the boy in his room and a large knife was later located nearby, police said.

Police arrived to see the baby being taken from the home by ambulance officers.

Both the child and his mother were taken to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in South Brisbane.

‘It was distressing to see such injuries to such a small child,’ he said.

Inspector Bragg said both the ambulance and police officers were ‘visibly distressed’ by the scene.

The 64-year-old grandmother is now assisting police with their inquiries.
