Police were called to Bennett Street at about 11.20am on Wednesday following reports of an altercation between a group of boys.

It is understood the attack involved high school students but the reason for the violent encounter is still being investigated.

‘Investigators believe the teen was involved in an altercation with a group of males prior to being stabbed,’ police spokesman Adam West told the Herald Sun.

The teen was flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries and is in a stable condition.

The weapon used to attack the boy is still unknown with police and SES crews scouring a nearby skate park and grasslands for evidence.

Police say the investigation into the attack is still ongoing.
