Backseat wiper: Children work the windscreen wipers of a clapped-out car by pulling RAGS attached to the wiper blades

  • The group are driving  a car down a motorway in Istanbul in the pouring rain
  • Youngster is manually operating the wipers with rags tied together to make rope
  • They hide their faces when they see the people in the next car recording them

This is the hilarious moment a man drives his car in the rain while a youngster in the back manually operates the broken windscreen wipers by pulling on them with tied rags.

The old vehicle’s bizarre manual feature, like something from The Flintstones, was filmed by a stunned motorist in the north-western Turkish province of Istanbul and was later shared on social media where it has been widely circulated.

In the video, a deeply-focused man is seen driving the old blue car along a motorway in the rain.

The man driving the car stares intently at the road as the rain cascades down his windscreen. Luckily for him, the girl in the back of the banger has some rags attached to the wipers to keep the pesky downpour out of his line of vision

As they bomb down the motorway in Istanbul province, another car slides up to them and records the bizarre stone-age vehicle on its way down the road.

Meanwhile, a person, reportedly a young woman, in the back seat pulls on knotted-together rags that are apparently tied to the windscreen wipers and being used to operate them manually.

When the camera person sidles up to the old vehicle, the bashful occupants cover their faces with their hands.

Social media users had a lot to say about the old banger’s unusual feature, with one commenting: ‘Nothing is impossible in this world!’

Others praised the ingenuity of the driver: ‘If this happened to my car, it would never enter my mind to fix it like this!’

Some thought it was ‘brilliant’ and a ‘solution to life’s problems.’

Some social media users praised the ingenuity of the group saying they'd never have thought of this if confronted by a similar situation. The family, however, are a little less proud of their achievement. They hide their face as the people recording lean over to capture it all on film
