Listeriosis starts with flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, muscle aches, nausea, and sometimes diarrhoea.

Symptoms of infection in pregnant women may be mild and include a temperature before or during birth.

The symptoms of listeriosis are usually described as ‘flu-like’, although fever and gastrointestinal symptoms can occur in pregnant women.

Early symptoms of listeria infection include fever, headache, tiredness and aches and pains.

NSW Health reports of 20-30 cases of listeriosis each year and has a high death rate.

Those bugged down with the deadly bacteria face long incubation periods, usually one or two weeks or up to 90 days.

In 2018, seven people died following a listeriosis outbreak found in rockmelon.

Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice and return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.

WHAT IS LISTERIA?

Listeria is an illness caused by eating foods contaminated by the bacteria.

Listeria infection is uncommon but it can cause death in at-risk people, such as the elderly and people whose immune systems are not working properly.

It can be dangerous to pregnant women and their unborn babies.

Early symptoms include fevers, headaches, tiredness. aches and pains.

Ignoring the symptoms above can lead to meningitis and septicemia.

Antibiotics can help, but prevention is best.
