An image of the ATM has gone viral on Reddit, with hundreds of commenters criticising the bakery.

Several customers said they would never shop there again while others said removing card payments was a return to the dark ages.

One commenter wrote: ‘I avoid these places out of principle despite being with ING. If you won’t take eftpos but have an ATM in the shop then you don’t get my business.’

Another added: ‘I refuse to shop anywhere that doesn’t take card. I never carry cash so why would I withdraw just for the one shop…’

Some customers pointed out that the bakery’s move was risky, because having cash on premises makes the store a target for thieves.

One wrote: ‘Also makes them an easy target. Cash only in a small town means there’s probably cash on the premises over night.’

The post did not reveal the name of the bakery or where it is located.
