Bali is named among the places to AVOID visiting in 2020 – but Brisbane is set to be the next ‘up-and-coming’ destination

  • Australia’s favourite holiday spot Bali has been blacklisted in 2010 travel guide
  • Island is named among the places tourists should avoid in Fodor’s ‘No Go’ List
  • Brisbane knocked out Australia’s popular hotspots to be the next ‘IT’ destination
  • Other locations to visit include Tokyo, New Zealand’s Christchurch and Hoi An

Australia’s favourite holiday hotspot Bali has been blacklisted in a world travel guide for 2020, while Brisbane is set to be the next big destination.

The Indonesian island has been named among the places tourists should avoid visiting next year, according to the latest Fodor’s ‘No Go’ List.

‘Being featured on the No List is hardly a scarlet letter. Rather, it’s a promise that when Fodor’s covers the destinations on the list, we’ll be doing so responsibly – warts and all,’ Fodor’s said.

And it’s no surprise Bali failed to make the cut.

The places you shouldn’t visit in 2020

  • Bali, Indonesia
  • Angkor Wat, Cambodia
  • Hanoi Train Street, Vietnam

The travel website said the wildly popular location has ‘suffered the effects of overtourism’ and has been overwhelmed with swarms of visitors in the last few years.

‘The government is weighing a tourist tax to help combat some of the more sinister effects on the environment,’ Fodor’s Travel said.

The Bali Environment Agency found the island produced 3,800 tons of waste every day, with only 60 per cent ending up in landfills – ‘an obvious observation to anyone visiting the island’.

Besides the negative environmental impacts, authorities are now cracking down on ‘disrespectful’ tourists who are ‘visiting religious sites in bathing suits, climbing over sacred sites, and generally disrespecting customs and cultural norms’.

Angkor Wat in Cambodia was also named in the list of places to avoid visiting in 2020 due to its influx of tourists in recent years.

Conservationists have warned tourists are damaging Cambodia’s most visited attraction – the 900-year-old temples.

‘Steps are slippery because of the many tourists who have walked them and bas-reliefs are worn down by the number of tourists who have touched them,’ the report claimed.

Another attraction to avoid is Hanoi Train Street in Vietnam in 2020, which has been overrun with visitors and social media influencers.

Tourists have been risking their lives posing for selfies or picturesque snaps by standing on the tracks of a working railway line.

Police have gone to extreme lengths to block people from the tracks to avoid accidents, and have even erected barricades to keep out visitors.

If you’re unsure of where to book your next overseas holiday, Tokyo, Vietnam’s Hoi An and New Zealand’s Christchurch have made Fodor’s Go List of 2020.

Surprisingly, Brisbane knocked out Australia’s popular hotspots for its ‘most up-and-coming yet down-to-earth city’.

‘Brisbane has way more to offer than just a jumping-off point to some of the best beaches in Australia,’ Fodor’s managing editor Rachael Levitt said.

‘Relaxed with routinely great weather and plenty of culture, nature, and nightlife, Brisbane offers visitors a chance to partake in the typically great Australian experience in an extremely laid-back scene.’
