Thousands of party-goers packed out nightclubs and bars across Britain as they marked the end of the hottest August Bank Holiday day ever.

Boozy revellers were out in force on Broad Street in Birmingham, in Headingley in Leeds and in Manchester last night as they took advantage of the last three day weekend before Christmas.

Many were in good spirits as they posed for the cameras, while others clearly took their celebrations one step too far, as the effects of the night’s alcohol intake began to take its toll.

Some were seen helping their friends home after a long night, as one woman gave a piggy back to her friend as they laughed and joked, while others had to be dragged off the floor after an evening of excess.

Many donned fancy dress, as punters in Leeds dressed in cricket whites to mark England’s incredible Ashes Test victory against Australia at Headingley earlier in the day.

Party-goers also danced on bins or played around with traffic cones, but many were not in such a jovial mood, as some were clearly worse for wear after a night of heavy drinking.

Scuffles broke out in some parts, and tired and emotional women had to be consoled by their friends as they waited for a taxi home.

Yesterday temperatures hit a record 92F (33.3C) on the second day of the long weekend, with temperatures at Heathrow rising above the 88.7F (31.7C) record set at the same location in 2001.
