Barbiecore is taking over the US Open as tennis pros show off their pink outfits.
The pinkification at the grand slam event in New York had fashionistas doing double takes.
Leading the parade was the women’s grand slam champion, 19-year-old Coco Gauff, who wowed with a bold fuchsia button-down satin top and matching cargo pants as she kissed and hugged her trophy tightly after her win.
Meanwhile Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, 20, and United States player Ben Shelton, 20, were some of the Kens who joined in on the fun along with Venus Williams, 43, and Sloane Stephens, 30, both also of the US.
Some sporting stars went all out in monochromatic athletic wear with sneakers, hats and even rackets to match.
Nineteen-year-old Coco Gauff has been crowned the US Open women’s champion over the weekend, and she sported this hot-pink number for her photo call after the match
Barbie palooza is here to stay and tennis players have jumped on the Barbiecore trend while donning pink outfits, accessories and even rackets. Pictured is Margot Robbie in the movie
The tournament started on August 22 and finished on September 10, just as New York Fashion Week began during the final duels.
Venus sported her line EleVen along with matching pink ombré hair, while Carlos wore a berry-colored Nike outfit and Australia Jordan Thompson showed off his color-blocked New Balance ensemble. In round one, Tamara Korpatsch of Germany used a pink Yonex racket with pink strings.
Even spectators flaunted the hue of the summer as CBS Mornings host Gayle King wore a flowy fuchsia summer dress and Hilaria Baldwin donned a hot pink snakeskin tank top.
Besides the movie Barbie offering viewers a fantasy aesthetic it also analyzed gender dynamics and sexism. Fittingly it was the film of the year and this US Open season marks 50 years that both men and women finalists have won equal prize money.
Men and women singles champions both take home a whopping $3 million each. In 1973 the US Open became the first sporting event in history to give the same payout to both genders.
On August 29 the City Parks Foundation honored feminist icon and tennis legend Billie Jean King for being the pioneer behind this pivotal change. After Billie won the grand slam in 1972 she was awarded $10,000, while men’s champion Ilie Năstase won $25,000.
She threatened that she would not play in the following year’s tournament unless she received the same payout therefore the financial modification was made for prize money to be equal.
But it’s not just the tennis court that the Barbiecore trend has taken over.
Celebrities such as Florence Pugh, Hailey Bieber, Lana Condor, Beyoncé, Gigi Hadid, Dua Lipa, and Khloe Kardashian have dazzled themselves up in pink outfits and accessories on the red carpets.
The culinary world has also participated in the Barbie palooza. Brands such as Cold Stone Creamery, Pinkberry and the Whole Foods Market have created ice creams, milkshakes and pasta kits to match the aesthetic.
Even Barbie moviegoers made a fashion show out of their screening and donned the pink palette.
The trend has maintained its hype a month after the film’s premiere and the US Open was not only serving tennis balls but style as well.
