Barcelona boss Quique Setien admits club may have to sign a new striker after Luis Suarez injury

‘It’s true we’re speaking about it’: Barcelona boss Quique Setien admits club may have to sign a new striker this month after Luis Suarez knee injury

Barcelona’s new manager Quique Setien has admitted the club are trying to sign a replacement for forward Luis Suarez this month.

The Uruguayan striker has been ruled out for the next four months after undergoing knee surgery and his absence could leave Barcelona short on firepower as they compete in LaLiga and the Champions League.

Suarez, 32, injured the meniscus in his right knee following Barca’s loss to Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup earlier this month.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported that Barcelona could make a bid for Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to plug the gap.

‘It’s true we’re speaking about it,’ Setien said ahead of Wednesday’s visit to Ibiza in the Copa del Rey.

‘But we still have to move things on a little bit.’

Setien said that his primary focus was on the cup tie and Saturday’s visit to Valencia as opposed to signing a striker despite the transfer window closing next week.

‘Everything else has to be studied exhaustively, then we will see what the most convenient [option] is,’ he added.

‘It’s an issue I still can’t answer and I am not going to do so. I have spoken about some thing with the club, but nothing in concrete.

‘They’re internal issues and it’s preferable for me if you don’t ask me, because I am not going to say anything, so let’s not waste time.’

Suarez was enjoying a fine season, scoring 14 goals and 11 assists in 23 matches across all competitions.
