During a fruitful title-winning campaign with Milan in Serie A, the Ivorian international scored six goals and notched 31 league appearances from defensive midfield.

His arrival could have a positive knock-on effect for Manchester United in their pursuit of Barcelona’s star midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who has been linked with the Red Devils all summer.

De Jong’s £55m move plus add-ons to Manchester was believed to be ’90 per cent’ complete last week, but the deal has since stalled.

The LaLiga giants have been entrenched in a financial crisis, restricted from signing priority transfer targets Robert Lewandowski, Bernardo Silva and Raphinha.

However, with Kessie’s transfer announced and Andreas Christensen’s free deal set to be unveiled later this week, Barcelona may feel more inclined to finalise De Jong’s departure to Old Trafford.

Kessie is set to be unveiled at the Nou Camp on Wednesday morning.
