Barcelona keen to ‘release Samuel Umtiti and Miralem Pjanic from their contracts’ as they look to free up funds amid fight to keep Lionel Messi at the Nou Camp… with club ‘hopeful pair will accept compensation package’

  • Barcelona are reportedly keen to release Samuel Umtiti and Miralem Pjanic
  • The pair still have time left on current deals so compensation needs to be agreed
  • With Lionel Messi now a free agent the club are keen to free up funds elsewhere
  • Pjanic only joined Barcelona last summer in a £55m move from Juventus

Barcelona are reportedly keen to offload Samuel Umtiti and Miralem Pjanic from their wage bill this summer to further free up funds.

Sergio Aguero, Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia have all arrived at the Nou Camp on free transfers, as the club’s troubled financial state necessitates cheap recruitment.

There is also the small matter of Lionel Messi’s situation. The Argentine icon is now a free agent after his contract at Barcelona expired at the end of June, with the club hopeful they can soon tie him down to a new deal.

According to Goal, Barcelona have offered to release Umtiti and Pjanic from their contracts, and will sit down with the pair in an attempt to negotiate a compensation package.

However, Pjanic still has three years on his current deal and Umtiti has two, meaning any agreements will likely be expensive for the club.

It is believed that a compensation figure will still prove to save the club money, and free up crucial funds that can be put towards convincing Messi to stay.

Pjanic only joined Barcelona last summer, in a deal worth £55m, but has failed to make a significant impact since arriving from Juventus.

The 31-year-old started just six La Liga matches last season, and completed the full 90 minutes in just one of those games.

Umtiti similarly struggled to nail down a place in the first-team, with a knee injury plaguing the defender over the last couple of seasons.

He also made six La Liga starts last campaign, along with just 35 minutes of Champions League action, and Barcelona are keen to move the Frenchman on.

Despite failing in their title bid, Ronald Koeman will remain in charge for a second season at the club and will hope to add to the Copa del Rey Barcelona won in April.
