Lionel Messi has handed Ernesto Valverde a huge boost after he returned to first-team training ahead of their tough Champions League opener with Borussia Dortmund.

The Catalan giants will be sure not to rush the 32-year-old back but will monitor his fitness ahead of their trip to Germany on Tuesday.

Messi has trained away from the first team for the past few weeks as he steps up his recovery but Barcelona fans will be delighted to see pictures of the Argentine training with his team-mates again.

It remains to be seen whether Messi will play a part in Tuesday’s encounter but Valverde will look to integrate him back into the side gently.

Ousmane Dembele also trained with the first team but his involvement was limited compared to Messi’s.

While pictures of Messi training will please fans, speculation about his Nou Camp future will not after he was linked with a sensational move to Inter Miami on Saturday.

David Beckham reportedly sent his fixer Paul McDonough to London to hold talks with Messi’s father Jorge, who acts as the Barcelona star’s advisor, according to The Sun.

The news that Messi could leave Barcelona on a free transfer next summer put the football world on high alert.

‘Messi signed until 2021. It was agreed that at the end of the penultimate season he is at liberty to leave for free,’ Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu told Barca TV last week.

Inter Miami FC are set to join the MLS next season from March, and Beckham is trying to find the best players possible for their debut.

He is apparently ‘open to the idea of sharing’ Messi, in a similar vein to the agreement he had with LA Galaxy.
