Barcelona: Sergio Busquets future uncertain, ‘with captain eyeing up MLS move’

Sergio Busquets’ future at Barcelona ‘is uncertain after the club’s latest contract offer is deemed very low… with the captain eyeing up a lucrative MLS move amid the Spanish giants’ financial issues’

Sergio Busquets’ future at Barcelona has been thrown into doubt after he was unimpressed with the club’s latest contract offer, according to reports in Spain.

The defensive midfielder, who captains the Spanish giants, has been a regular for Xavi’s side this season, with 33 appearances in all competitions.

The 34-year-old’s deal runs out at the end of the season, meaning clubs outside Spain can negotiate to sign him on a free transfer this summer.

Barcelona are keen to tie him down for at least another season at the Nou Camp, but Mundo Deportivo (MD), via Football Espana, report their latest offer is considered ‘very low’ for a player of his stature and reputation.

The cash-strapped Catalan side have massive financial issues which are limiting the wages they can offer players.

Mundo add that Busquets is now uncertain of whether to renew or not, amid several contract offers from elsewhere.

Two Major League Soccer teams in the United States, reportedly David Beckham’s Inter Miami and Toronto FC, are interested in the veteran’s signature.

And indeed, both clubs are believed to be offering a ‘significantly’ more lucrative salary than Barcelona.

Busquets is reportedly very interested in playing in MLS to round off his career, with a decision on his future expected in the coming weeks.

He is said to be waiting for news on former team-mate Lionel Messi’s decision before committing to another year at Barcelona.

Busquets’ decision over where he will play next season is an emotional one, rather than one driven by financial concerns.

According to Mundo, Busquets and his family have been planning to sync up his final playing years with those of great friend Messi’s, and have previously discussed them at length.

LaLiga leaders Barca return after the international break with a trip to the division’s bottom side Elche on April 1, knowing a win will put them 15 points clear of rivals Real Madrid in second.
