Barnaby Joyce makes an extraordinary claim about Kmart shoppers in Canberra press conference

Former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce has made an extraordinary claim about Kmart shoppers.

The Nationals backbencher was speaking at a media conference in Canberra when he made the claim that ‘Kmart shoppers don’t care about the Paris Agreement’.

In the conference, on energy policy and drought, the member for New England said that the number one concern for the area was drought.

‘The issue is this: people in the Kmart, people in the local pub, they don’t care about the Paris agreement. It means nothing to them. It has no purpose,’ Mr Joyce said, according to The Guardian.

‘What matters to them is this: that they can be able to afford their power bills and they currently cannot. It’s not about power prices staying where they are. They are too high. They’ve got to go down.’

The Paris Agreement, made in 2015, outlined that Australia would cut emissions to a level that would be 26 per cent lower than in 2005.

This is intended to be done by 2030.

Kmart’s environmental policy, outlined on their website, said: ‘By December 2020, we will reduce average store energy use (and therefore greenhouse gas emissions) by at least 20 per cent.’

To maximise energy efficiency Kmart Australia has replaced metal halide lights with LED alternatives.

The company also has their sights set on trialling LED fittings to replace fluorescent tubes.

Social media users and social commentators have hit back at the remarks.

One user wrote: ‘I was in Kmart the other day and I care about the Paris Agreement and anything else that addresses global warming.’

Another wrote: ‘Was at Kmart chatting about the Paris Agreement and global warming while shopping.’
