Barry Humphries’ bizarre breakfast routine resurfaces after his death at age 89: Dame Edna star was notorious for stunt during his Melbourne University days

A bizarre stunt comedian Barry Humphries used to pull during his university days has resurfaced following news of his death on Saturday.

A fan whose parents attended Melbourne University at the same time as Humphries revealed the young performer was known for his unusual breakfast routine.

Each morning, while on his way to his classes via train, he would pick up an item from every train stop to put together his morning meal.

‘My parents were at Melbourne University when Barry Humphries was there, and they told the story of how he organised for a bunch of people to wait at the train stations on his way to university in the city,’ the fan explained.

‘At each station, one of them would pass him an object through the [carriage] window and so he was passed a spoon, then a bowl, then a jug of milk, then a container of breakfast cereal, and so he gradually put together his breakfast.’

The comment was posted on the Instagram account of British actress Kate Beckinsale, who paid tribute to the comedy legend after his passing.

‘What a loss. A unique, ahead-of-his-time absolute genius. Fly well, Barry Humphries. There will be no one like you ever again,’ the Underworld star wrote.

Humphries died surrounded by his immediate family, including his wife of 30 years Lizzie Spender, his children Tessa, Emily, Oscar and Rupert, and 10 grandchildren.

He is best known for his characters Dame Edna Everage and Sir Les Patterson.

Humphries, who has lived in London for decades, came back to Sydney in December for Christmas. He subsequently suffered a fall that led to his hip replacement surgery.

‘He was completely himself until the very end, never losing his brilliant mind, his unique wit and generosity of spirit,’ his family said in a statement.

Humphries spent more than 70 years on the stage and was ‘an entertainer to his core’ who loved his audiences and never took them for granted.

But he was also a painter, author, poet and collector of art.

‘He was also a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a friend and confidant to many. His passing leaves a void in so many lives,’ his family said.

‘The characters he created, which brought laughter to millions, will live on.’
