Bayern Munich central defender Mats Hummels tried beer mug lifting and basketball on Wednesday afternoon as he took part in a sponsor event at the Audi Dome in Munich.

Hummels, a known basketball fan, has previously taken part in a head-to-head competition with Bayern forward Thomas Muller.

But this time he was with defensive midfielder Martinez as they played in an exhibition match before attempting to lift as many mugs of beer as possible.

The central defender strained as he attempted to keep his right arm straight while holding a litre mug of German lager Paulaner. 

The brief respite from the football season was more than likely welcome after Bayern slipped up away to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Thorgan Hazard and Matthias Ginter scored twice for the hosts before Arturo Vidal pulled one back with 16 minutes to play.

It was Bayern’s second league defeat of the season, having played 13, won nine and drawn just twice.

Bayern manager Jupp Heynckes’s side are three points clear of RB Leipzig at the top of the Bundesliga.

The table toppers are back in action on Saturday as they take on Hannover 96 at the Allianz Arena.
