A man with a cast on his arm allegedly claimed he had coronavirus and coughed on police after refusing to leave Bondi Beach.

Lifeguards called police at 9am on Sunday after the 21-year-old allegedly ignored signs warning that the world famous beach was closed.

Officers gave the man a caution for failing to comply with the signs.

‘After the man [allegedly] refused to follow move on directions he was arrested,’ a spokeswoman told Daily Mail Australia.

‘During the arrest the man [allegedly] coughed at an officer and claimed to have COVID-19.’

Images of the arrest showed the man being pinned to a metal railing by police before he was removed from the beach.

He was taken to Waverley Police Station and charged with four offences, including failing to comply with terms of notice erected by council and intimidating police officer.

Police confirmed he does not have COVID-19. 

He was refused bail to appear at Central Local Court on Monday. 

Beaches in Sydney have been closed indefinitely in a bid to slow the spread of the coronavirus. 

NSW Police patrolled Bondi Beach on horseback on Saturday and approached anyone who was sitting down in the grass.  

They asked couples and families to move along back to their homes.

Groups of friends and single beach-goers were also informed that they could not stay at Bondi beach or its surrounds. 

The number of positive coronavirus cases across Australia has reached 5,688.
