Three bearded dragons and a pet python named Sapphire have miraculously survived a fire that gutted a home and caused $60,000 worth of damage.

Scott Murray rushed into his Elizabeth East home, in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, to save Sapphire from the flames about 11.20am on Thursday.

‘I got her out (Sapphire) I tried to get the lizards and stuff out but it was too much smoke in there, I couldn’t get them out. Luckily the fireies have saved them all,’ he told 7News.

Mr Murray explained he used a bucket of water and wet sheets to try and stop the blaze, but was forced to escape when the smoke became too much.

With Sapphire latched around his neck and crawling around his arms, Mr Murray thanked the firefighters for their quick response and for saving most of the house.

The SA Metropolitan Fire (MFS) were called to the Paginton Crescent home after a pillow was knocked on to a bar heater and caught alight.

A spokeswoman for MFS told Daily Mail Australia 15 firefighters arrived at the scene and found the house was ‘heavily smoked’ due to the fire in a bedroom at the back of the house.

They successfully put out the blaze and estimate it caused about $60,000 worth of damage.

Smoke alarms throughout the house alerted Mr Murray and a woman to the fire.

The house fire comes about 12 hours after a ‘suspicious’ blaze at a unit in a neighbouring suburb.

MFS and police were called to Davey Street, in Elizabeth Park, at about 11.30pm on Wednesday to extinguish the vacant unit which was engulfed in flames.

They believe the fire had been lit in a wheelie bin which was placed against the front door of the unit.

The blaze spread to the carport and caused structural damage to the premises, which will costing about $50,000 to repair.
