Beatrice becomes FIRST princess in the Queen’s family to become a stepmother

Princess Beatrice has become the first stepmother among the young generation of royals after marrying Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in secret.

The property tycoon shares a young son, two-year-old Christopher ‘Wolfie’ Woolf, with his glamorous former fiancée of three-and-a-half years, Dara Huang.

Beatrice, who is ninth in line to the throne, is a granddaughter of the Queen, has become the only princess to marry someone with children and take on a stepchild.

The couple were due to tie the knot at the Chapel Royal of St James’s Palace at the end of May. But their ceremony was postponed due to Covid-19 and no new date was given by the palace at the time.

The bride’s grandparents the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, who have both been in isolation at Windsor Castle, were in attendance. Photos show Her Majesty looking resplendent in green as she left Royal Lodge today.

History of British royal stepmothers

Former Queen of England Joan of Navarre became stepmother to King Henry IV’s children when they married on 7 February, 1403.

Joan, who already had seven children with her late first husband John IV, Duke of Brittany, had no further children with Henry. She enjoyed a good relationship with Henry’s children from his first marriage, and is recorded to have often take the side of the future Henry V during family quarrels.

Anne Boleyn became stepmother to husband King Henry VII’s daughter Mary I, which he shared with his first wife, Catherine of Aragon – as did his four future wives Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr.

The subsequent four women also became stepmother to his and Anne Boleyn’s daughter Elizabeth I.

Jane Seymour gave birth to his only son Edward VI, with the role of stepmother to three children falling to his final three wives.

Queen Mary I, also known as Mary Tudor, became a stepmother when she married Prince Philip of Spain, who had a son from a previous marriage.

Lady Mary Grey, the youngest daughter of Henry Grey, 1st Duke of Suffolk, and Frances Brandon, provoked scandal when she married the Queen’s serjeant porter Thomas Keyes, son of Richard Keyes, esquire, of East Greenwich, Kent. He was a widower twice her age with six or seven children, which she became stepmother to.

Mary of Moderna became stepmother to widow James II of England’s two surviving daughters when they married in 1673.

It is thought the bride’s parents, Prince Andrew and the Duchess of York, were both in attendance. It is not known whether her younger sister Princess Eugenie, 30, and brother-in-law Jack Brooksbank were present

The only other step-parent in Queen Elizabeth II’s immediate family is her son Prince Charles, who became stepfather to Camilla Parker Bowles’ son Tom and daughter Laura when they wed in 2005.

In turn, the Duchess of Cornwall has become a stepmother to William and Harry and a stepgrandmother to Wills and Kate’s children, Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince Louis, two.

Edoardo and Chinese-American interior designer Dara previously lived together in London before he moved in with Beatrice at St James Palace.

His former fiancée is a highly-successful architect with her own design company, Design Haus Liberty.

Edo is said to enjoy an amicable relationship with Huang and prides himself on still being an active part of his son’s life.
