BEAUTY KNOW HOW: It’s beginning to smell a lot like Christmas

BEAUTY KNOW HOW: It’s beginning to smell a lot like Christmas

And it’s finally time to start burning some seasonal scents without appearing to be a bit of a yuletide obsessive. Here are my favourites…

Seed to Skin Winter Smoke diffuser

★ Seed to Skin Winter Smoke diffuser (£87, libertylondon.com) I normally prefer a flame, but this diffuser really is the business. It smells of cosy evenings by the fire so will serve you well all winter.

★ Space NK Shimmering Spice candle (£26, spacenk.com) Cinnamon, orange, vanilla… ideal for setting the mood for a festive soirée and drinking some mulled wine. And it’s got a revamped look for this year featuring decorative baubles in soft metallic tones.

★ Annick Goutal Une Forêt d’Or candle (£66, libertylondon.com) This drew gasps of joy when unwrapped at the YOU office. A heady mix of pine branches and orange rind. A cracker of a fragrance.

★ Jo Loves Christmas Trees candle (£55, joloves.com) You couldn’t distil the smell of December any better than this. The blend of pine, incense and amber is a seasonal essential. I just wouldn’t feel festive without it.

Calling all make-up moguls…

A beauty retail innovation is coming – a ‘digital space’, if you will, where your profile can also act as a shop.

MyBeautyBrand is the brainchild of Robin Derrick (a creative director and, FYI, husband of make-up artist Lisa Eldridge) and Max Leykind (who co-founded Eyeko). ‘The back-of-the-envelope idea is that it’s an Avon for Gen Z,’ says Robin.

But you don’t have to buy stock, there’s no deposit, contract, fees or targets. You just put on your make-up and post images of yourself. If people in the community like what they see, they can buy it ‘off your face’ and you can earn commission. Set out to make money or use it for inspiration to see how others do their look – but it’s definitely not about ‘influencers’; no one’s paid to be on the site or to promote it but top sellers can earn shares in the company.

Currently the only make-up that’s sellable is their own brand, By.Me. It’s a great range – produced by a leading Italian beauty manufacturer – but they plan to add more brands, offer customisable make-up so you can create (and sell) your own shade and there are collaborations in the pipeline. It looks like fun. Mybeautybrand.com will launch this Thursday.
