BEAUTY THERAPY: Meet my beauty best friends

BEAUTY THERAPY: Meet my beauty best friends

Despite endless innovations, some products just keep coming back like a favourite song. These are the trusty stalwarts that, amid fields of newness, I return to time and again beauty

Dr Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Glow Pad

Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels (£25 for eight pairs, marksandspencer.com) The brand’s top seller, these make the eye area look – and even feel – less tired. Great any time but also good for plane travel.

Dr Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Glow Pad (£34 for 20, spacenk.com) Wipe them in a circular motion over face, neck and décolletage for an incredibly natural-looking tan that will develop over about four hours.

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Body Lotion

Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Body Lotion (from £3.99, boots.com) A classic, deeply hydrating body moisturiser that doesn’t feel greasy – I love its sweet smell of lush holiday getaways.

Dove DermaSpa Summer Revived Lotion (£7.79, boots.com) A good but inexpensive gradual tan for the body. Though I have many tanners to test and there’s a plethora of great choices, this one remains a reliable option.

Boutique Velvet Blusher Pink Rose

Boutique Velvet Blusher Pink Rose (£3, sainsburys.co.uk) This cream-to-powder blush is one of my all-time favourites and never out of use for long, no matter what else turns my head. Very natural effect but lasts the day.

Garden of Wisdom Vitamin C 23% Serum & Ferulic Acid (£10, victoriahealth.com) A high percentage of vitamin C for skin brightening and evening – plus ferulic acid for free radical protection. Effective and remarkably cheap.

Why we want what Celine’s got

Speaking of songs, recently, many of the world’s beauty journos gathered in Las Vegas for a special announcement: Céline Dion, ballad-belter extraordinaire, had been signed up by L’Oréal Paris as its latest spokesmodel. And very quickly she had a roomful of semi-cynics eating out of her hands. She’s a bit of a charmer and has a wicked sense of humour (who knew?).

She’s also high-octane energy: nonstop dancing, singing and generally megawatting on stage. And for four evenings a week after her Vegas show, she has ballet lessons. Is she just a bit, in her own stage words, ‘coco loco’? (‘Oh, you remembered!’ she enthuses when I repeat her phrase back to her.)

So how, aged 51, does she keep so vivacious? ‘Whoa-oh, I’ve got stamina,’ she sings the start of her reply (a common Céline-ism; I serenaded her right back). ‘I’m almost killing them,’ she jokes of her team. ‘It’s not my goal – they have to stop me. And the newest of the people that I work with say, “We’ve never seen her yawn once.”’ Those present nod in agreement, silently mouthing ‘she never stops’. Alas, there’s no magic vitamin pill we can all pop. ‘It comes from my family. We’re all crazy.’ She doesn’t even need a nightly eight hours of sleep. ‘If I have to have 28 hours of straight work, I will do it. I will. If I can dance for 12, I will. If I [can] have 12 hours of sleep, I will. If I only have three, I will.’ So not much help for the rest of us – other than we should all try to be a bit more Céline.

Her campaigns kick off with Excellence hair colour, but expect more soon. I suspect her L’Oréal Paris inking will prove to be a massive crowd-pleaser.
