More than 4,000 pounds of beef patties recalled in Iowa and Wisconsin over metal contamination fears

- Metal shards were found in the product but it’s unclear when or what kind of metal
- Packages were shipped to firms that further process the meat in Iowa and Wisconsin, which was then sold to stores in the two states
- As of Tuesday, no one has reported falling ill from consuming the patties
Thousands of pounds of beef patties have been recalled due to a possible metal contamination, health officials announced Monday.
OSI Industries, LLC, based in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, recalled 4,218 pounds of ready-to-eat beef patties over fears they ‘may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically metal’, according to a notice from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Health officials say no one has reported any ‘adverse reactions’ yet from consuming the patties.
The products were shipped to firms that further process the meat in Iowa and Wisconsin, then sold to stores in the state.

Subject to recall are 38-pound boxes of frozen packages labeled ‘Char-broiled Beef Patties (Caramel Color Added’ with lot code 22219.
The products were produced on August 10, 2019 and have the establishment number EST. 1300 inside the USDA mark of inspection.
It remains unclear when the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) was notified of the contamination.
It’s also unclear how the metal got into the patties and the type of metal that was found by officials.
FSIS designated the recall as Class I, meaning ‘a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death’.
Customers are urged not to consume the products and either throw them out or return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund.

This is the latest in a series of recalls of food products due to metal contamination.
Last month, Kenosha Beef International, which sells seasoned beef to Taco Bell, recalled an unspecified amount after metal shavings were found in the meat.
In July, Michigan-based Ada Valley Gourmet Foods, Inc recalled nearly 3,500 pounds of raw ground beef meatloaf products over a contamination of broken metal bits.
And in March, Tyson Foods recalled more than 69,000 pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat chicken strip products after it two customers reported findings pieces of metal in the product.
