A Girl Scout cookie is just about the last thing that most people would think to dip in their hummus, but one food company seems to think that flavor mash-up is missing from the market.
Biena, which specializes in chickpea snacks, has a new flavor coming to Whole Foods this June: Thin Mints.
According to The Washington Post, the brand’s founder Poorvi Patodia said the discovery of the flavor combo was a happy accident.
Coming soon: Biena is releasing Thin Mints chickpeas this summer at Whole Foods
Something new: The chickpeas have been flavored with peppermint and dipped in chocolate
Odd combo: They came up with the flavor on their own and reached out to the Girl Scouts for a partnership
The Girls Scouts didn’t exactly call on Biena to make the product. Rather, the snack company stumbled upon the flavor and licensed the name.
Biena actually has several unexpected chickpea flavors: In addition to savory ones like sea salt, ranch, and barbecue, it has roasted chickpeas covered in salted caramel and dark chocolate.
When they created a peppermint-flavored chickpea, the brand decided to dip those in chocolate as well for the Thin Mints mash-up.
‘People started to make the comment that these taste a whole lot like Girl Scout Thin Mint cookies,’ Patodia said. ‘From there, I thought, “I wonder if the Girl Scouts would actually partner with us?”‘
Biena has several chickpea snack flavors including ranch, barbecue, honey-roasted, and sour cream & onion
Unexpected: They already sell a variety that is covered in dark chocolate
Sweet: There is also a salted caramel chickpea snack from the brand
The gluten-free snack is made with fair-trade chocolate and cane sugar, plus four other ingredients.
It will be available exclusively at Whole Foods from June until September, when it will also roll out in other stores.
In recent years, the Girl Scouts have team up with several other brands for collaborations. There has also been Thin Mints-flavored Dunkin’ Donuts coffee, Nesquik milk, Quaker Chewy granola bars, and Coffe-Mate creamer.
Recently, Yoplait released Thin Mints-flavored yogurt, while Thin Mints Crunch bars, Breyers ice cream, and Pillsbury brownie and cupcake mix have also been on the market
