Stunning video has emerged of cancer fraudster Belle Gibson saying she has been ‘adopted’ by an Ethiopian ethnic group in Melbourne.

In an interview filmed by a community media group late last year, Gibson is referred to by the traditional name ‘Sabontu’, wears a headscarf and says she has been blessed by ‘the Lord’, ‘Allah’ and the local community. 

In the clip, Gibson reveals she has volunteered among the Oromo population in Melbourne for the past four years.

The woman behind the notorious Whole Pantry con said ‘my heart is deeply embedded in the Oromo people’. 

The Oromo are the largest ethnic group in the east African nation of Ethiopia and a large diaspora lives in Victoria. 

‘My involvement in the Oromo community has been for the last four years and it started through volunteering,’ Gibson told Shabo Media.  

‘And then I became deeply invested in the community because I saw the character and the values of your people. 

‘Through the rights of the Oromo I feel completely adopted by your nation and your people.’ 

Gibson spoke of being involved in the struggle for independence in Oromia – a region of Ethiopia. 

‘I feel like my heart is as invested as yours’ and your family’s,’ she tells the reporter. 

‘I see no difference in your struggle and the struggle that I have for fighting of the liberation of Oromia.

‘Your struggle is my struggle!’

She spoke of receiving a blessing ‘by your people, from our Lord’ and also refers to ‘Allah’.  

The Shabo Media spokesman said Gibson often attends community events and that she had ‘changed a lot’ and was ‘trying to move on from it’.  

‘She’s part of the community, she’s into it – she’s trying to help out the community. We know what she’s done before.’ 

THE OROMO: THE LARGEST ETHNIC GROUP IN ETHIOPIA

The Oromo are the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia and are mainly concentrated in the Oromia region, in central Ethiopia.

A large Oromo diaspora lives in Melbourne.

 

The spokesman said she had been given the name Sabontu. 

‘When you become Oromo you take given names… she tried to be Oromo so she given some names’. 

The interview was greeted with positive Facebook comments from the Oromo community.

One commenter said: ‘You are one of our amongst heroes … we love you standing with us.’

‘Sabbontu, we proud of you!’ said another.  

Daily Mail Australia exclusively revealed this week that Gibson owes the taxpayer $500,000 in fines, penalties and interest over her Whole Pantry fraud. 

Her home in Northcote was raided by Sheriff’s Officers executing a ‘seize and sell’ warrant on Wednesday. 

Consumer Affairs Victoria wants to sell off assets Gibson has, in order to recoup her fine.  

Gibson did not answer the door this week.
