Ben Davies ‘determined to stay at Liverpool despite not making a single appearance since move’

Ben Davies ‘determined to fight on at Liverpool despite failing to make a single appearance since shock £2m January move… with ex-Preston defender willing to snub loan moves to Bournemouth and Celtic’

  • Ben Davies joined Liverpool in a shock £2m move from Preston in January
  • He has yet to feature for the Reds and has only made the bench eight times
  • Celtic were close to sealing a £2m move for Davies before being gazumped
  • But Davies will reportedly turn down interest from them and Bournemouth

Ben Davies is determined to make it at Liverpool and will snub interest in a loan move from Celtic and Bournemouth, according to reports.

The 25-year-old has yet to make an appearance for the Reds and only made the bench eight times since he completed a surprise £2million from Preston in January, which also saw Dutch defender Sepp van der Berg head in the opposite direction on loan.

Jurgen Klopp moved to bring in cover for the injured Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez by signing Davies and Ozan Kabak, who featured 13 times before returning to Schalke earlier this summer upon the completion of his loan.

Davies’ prospects of featuring next season also appear bleak with van Dijk, Gomez and Joel Matip all returning from injury as well as the £36m capture of RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate.

But according to The Mirror, Davies is determined to fight on at Anfield and will shun a move to Celtic and Bournemouth who are offering him routes out of the club.

Sportsmail revealed earlier this week that the Parkhead club have re-joined the race for Davies after being gazumped in a £2m move of their own by the Reds in January and are willing to sign him on a season-long loan.

Davies – a left-footed defender – came through the ranks at Preston and after making his debut for them in 2013, went on to figure in 145 matches for North End and went out on loan five times prior to his move to Merseyside.

But the same outlet adds Liverpool boss Klopp has boosted his morale by telling him he wants him to stay for the upcoming campaign as the Reds looked to wrestle back their Premier League crown from Manchester City.

Davies’ 2020-21 season was ended prematurely when he suffered a calf injury in April, but has now returned to full fitness and will attempt to prove his worth when Liverpool begin pre-season training on Monday.

A 34-man travelling squad will head to Austria for a pre-season training camp on July 12, beginning their preparations for the new season in the state of Salzburg before moving across Austria to Tyrol later on.

The Reds are yet to announce any pre-season friendlies but more details of their schedule are expected in the coming days.

Liverpool begin the new Premier League season away at newly-promoted Norwich on August 14 before successive home games against Burnley and Chelsea.
