Ben Davies ‘set to leave Liverpool without playing a single minute since shock £2m January move with relegated Sheffield United keen on loan switch for Reds outcast’

  • Ben Davies looks set to leave Liverpool without making a single appearance
  • The defender was a shock £2m signing from Preston in January amid injury woes
  • The 25-year-old struggled with injuries himself and failed to make it onto pitch
  • With Davies likely to leave, Sheffield United are reportedly targeting the outcast

Liverpool outcast Ben Davies is reportedly set to leave the club without playing a single minute.

The defender was a surprise £2million signing from Preston in January with Jurgen Klopp at the time needing desperate cover for injured stars Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

But despite their limited options at the back, the 25-year-old didn’t make a single appearance after struggling with injuries himself.

With the Reds boosting their defence this summer with the £36m signing of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig alongside the returns of van Dijk and Gomez, Davies looks unlikely to force his way into the team.

He also likely finds himself behind Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams in the pecking order after stepping up in the starters’ absence last season.

Despite Sportsmail reporting last week that Davies was desperate to fight his way into contention, it appears as though Klopp has made his decision.

The Sun are reporting that the centre-back will leave the Reds this summer, with relegated side Sheffield United keen on a loan move.

Regular starters Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are nearing full fitness for start of season

The report indicates the Blades are keen on an experienced Championship defender and see Davies as a good option after making 136 appearances in the second tier for Preston.

It was previously reported that Bournemouth and Celtic were also interested in a temporary move for Davies.

Both van Dijk and Gomez have returned to first-team training at Liverpool’s pre-season camp in Austria, with Klopp revealing the pair ‘look really good’ as they step up their fitness.
