Joy Moffat, who has lived in the area for 43 years, told the BBC: ‘Everybody has been fantastic, they have been patrolling the drive night and day which is so admirable.

‘It’s the only step to take, the council won’t do anything because this is private land. The police can’t do anything.

‘It’s a ridiculous situation. The law needs to be changed, it’s just diabolical.’

Wokingham District Council refused to comment when asked by MailOnline because the street is on private land.

Thames Valley Police said there has been no investigation opened into the matter.

Around 30 families are taking part in the watch, rotating to make sure strangers are questioned before they enter the street.
