A school in Berlin has built a 5ft 11in fence to stop prostitutes and ‘unscrupulous characters’ walking onto campus.

Discarded condoms, syringes and even excrement were showing up on the grounds of the Französisches Gymnasium high school, which is near the infamous Kurfürstenstraße in Germany’s capital.

Officials reported that because the prostitutes have nowhere else to wash themselves, they were using the school – and relieving themselves ‘wherever they please’.

Explaining the need for the fence, district school inspector Carsten Spallek told the Berliner Zeitung: ‘There were always complaints about unscrupulous characters including prostitutes walking shamelessly and illegally into school grounds even during the day.’

Officials said prostitutes were walking into the school’s grounds and relieving themselves. They also said there were discarded condoms and excrement in the area. Pictured: A stock image of a prostitute

The 400ft-long barrier has cost the city about £52,500.

Its construction has been largely welcomed by locals.

District co-ordinator Michal Klinnert said: ‘The prostitutes eat, stand, drink and litter. It looks filthy in the late evening.’

He added that the prostitutes are dropped off in vans every morning – sometimes directly in front of the school.

Prostitution is legal in Germany and most sex workers are attached to brothels.

Some, however, work on the streets to avoid expensive fees for rooms.

Unlike in most cities, Berlin does not restrict the areas in which prostitutes can ply their trade in the streets, according to USA Today.
