City were widely tipped to at least reach the next stage of the top tier European competition but instead found themselves jetting back home after falling to a 3-1 defeat against Lyon.

The club did clinch more silverware through their Carabao Cup triumph earlier this term, but Pep Guardiola’s men would go on to surrender their league title and also fail to retain the FA Cup.

Liverpool fans have every right to be ecstatic after their team brought an end to their 30-year league title hoodoo, but Silva could not resist firing back at those who had gloated about their success.

He wrote: ‘And to all Liverpool fans that have nothing else to do than to come to a Man City player account, I’m also sorry for you but for the wrong reasons…  pathetic… go celebrate your titles, or try to find a partner, drink a beer with a friend, read a book… so many options.’

City have never progressed beyond the quarter-final stage of the Champions League under the stewardship of Pep Guardiola, but were tipped to finally break their curse after knocking out Real Madrid.

But it was Lyon who will instead face a rampant Bayern Munich in the final four in Lisbon after City fell apart throughout the one-legged clash.

Maxwel Cornet opened the scoring for the Ligue 1 outfit with a smart finish inside Ederson’s near post, before Kevin de Bruyne converted into the far corner with a beautifully struck first-time effort.

Lyon sealed the win through a double from Moussa Dembele, which came either side of a horror miss from Raheem Sterling.

Silva, who was a surprise absentee from the clash after being named among the substitutes as part of a formation reshuffle, earlier vowed that City will bounce back next campaign.

He tweeted: ‘The 2019/2020 season has ended for us in a very disappointing way. To all the fans, we’re sorry for this frustrating season.

‘The only thing we can promise is that in 2020/2021 we’ll fight a lot to do much better and get back to winning important things for you guys!’
