Bert Newton waited for his wife Patti to leave the hospital room before he took his last breath

Lauren Newton revealed a heartbreaking detail about her father Bert’s death during her eulogy at his funeral in Melbourne on Friday. 

The TV icon’s 40-year-old daughter said her dad waited for her mother Patti to leave the hospital before he took his final breath. 

‘Saying goodbye has been heartbreaking for us all, especially Mum,’ Lauren wrote in her eulogy, which was read out by radio and TV announcer Peter Smith.

‘They loved one another so much, and I know how he waited until she left the room to take his last breath, because while she was with him, he couldn’t have gone.’

She added: ‘My beautiful dad will be with us forever in our hearts and memories. But life will never be the same without him. I love you, Dad.’

Earlier this month, Patti, 76, revealed she had missed being by Bert’s side as he died by mere minutes.

‘I left at ten past seven, and I was just pulling around to come into my drive and I get the call to say he’d taken his last breath at 7.22pm,’ she told reporters. 

She added: ‘So I missed him, but maybe he didn’t want me to be there for his last breath.’   

Patti – who was married to Bert for 47 years – said towards the end of his life, he ‘just couldn’t do it anymore’, but believed he didn’t want her to watch him go.

‘He had such a fabulous attitude. And he gave us so much joy right up to the end,’ she revealed.

‘His year was not only tough health-wise, but mentally he had a lot to cope with.’

Bert had his leg amputated earlier this year after a toe infection that led to another range of complications.

His health first became a concern in 2012 when he underwent a quadruple bypass.

In the years following the surgery, the four-time Logie winner was hospitalised three times with pneumonia and was also diagnosed with anaemia.

Bert was hospitalised again in March and underwent surgery on his leg in May.

The infection was ‘linked to his diabetes’ and was life-threatening, with doctors telling him the surgery was a ‘life or death decision’.

Bert died on October 30 while in palliative care in Melbourne aged 83. 

With a showbiz career spanning across eight decades, Bert was the last remaining link between the dawn of Aussie television and today’s industry.
