Best gin in Australia has been revealed $75 craft distillery beat 150 other entrants

A $75 gin has been named the BEST in Australia at prestigious awards – beating more than 150 craft creations for the top spot

  • A bespoke gin distillery has won a top award for its stunning craft creation  
  • The Victoria business is owned and operated by three friend with a love of gin  
  • Southern Strength Gin, $75, is flavoured with angelica, coriander and lemon 

A craft distillery run by three friends has taken the top honour and been rewarded with $10,000 at the Australian Gin Awards 2019.

Southern Strength Gin, $75, by Never Never Co. based in Thebarton, Victoria was awarded ‘Gin of Show’ beating out 150 other craft blends in the Classic Dry category.

The exquisite drop made from a blend of angelica root, coriander seed and lemon was described by judges as being ‘beautifully balanced’.

‘Immediately delicious on the palate rising to a rich high point then slowly leading to a welcoming finish taking you back to a lingering palate.’

The Best in Class winners are: 

Classic Dry: Never Never Distilling. Southern Strength Gin

Contemporary: Archie Rose. Distiller’s strength Gin

Matured: The West Winds Gin. Barrel Expedition 11

Old Tom: Kangaroo Island Spirits. KIS Old Tom

Australian Navy: Mt Uncle Distillery. Botanic Australia Navy Strength

Flavoured: Darby-Norris Distillery. Blueberry Gin

The distillery is owned and operated by three friends who are industry professionals, each having spent years working and drinking in cocktail bars.

‘It’s important to us that these spirits inspire the next chapter of creative drink creation by some of Australia’s best bartenders,’ reads a statement on Never Never’s site.

‘We want to have fun while we’re doing it and this is reflected in our packaging, our language and our interpretation of what makes our story important.’

The ceremony also recognised craft gins from other distilleries around Australia and awarding the blends according to a number of categories.

Taking out Best In Class award for Contemporary Gin was Distillers Strength Gin by Sydney distillery, Archie Rose, priced at $99.99.

The judges wrote: ‘Lovely gin, at this ABV hard to get the botanical mix right, but the judges all agreed that you nailed it.’

The award for Best In Class for Matured Gin was given to Barrel Expedition II, $99.99, by The West Winds Gin, located in Western Australia.

‘A delicious nose of good gin and subtle oak. Sweet and lusciously creamy upfront with a well-driven palate of gin and oak bouncing off each other in a balanced marriage gently sliding into a strong warm finish,’ the judges said.

Best Flavoured Gin was awarded to a hand-crafted blueberry gin by Darby-Norris, priced at $82

Best In Class in the Old Tom category was awarded to Kangaroo Island Spirits, KIS Old Tom Gin, priced at $120.

The judges said the gin had a good nose with ‘sweet overtones’ and was ‘sweet and luscious upfront’.

Botanic Australis Navy Strength Gin, priced at $88.88 took out the top prize in the Navy Strength Gin category.

The gin by Queensland-based distillery Mt. Uncle was recognised by the judges for being ‘a solid’ Navy Strength Gin.

Taking out Best In Class for in the Flavoured Gin category was a hand-crafted blueberry gin by Tasmanian distillery Darby-Norris.

The $82 gin was recognised by the judges for its great intensity ‘delightfully jammy fruit and lovely texture due to fine tannins’.
