Beto O’Rourke led the 2020 presidential candidates in their responses to the shooting in El Paso, Texas on Saturday afternoon.

The Texas Democrat urged followers to listen to the advice of authorities as details emerged of how multiple people were reportedly killed at a Walmart when a gunman opened fire with an assault rifle.

Police said there may be more than one suspect involved in an active shooter situation Saturday and said on Twitter they had received ‘multi reports of multiple shooters’. 

‘Truly heartbreaking. Stay safe, El Paso,’ O’Rourke tweeted. ‘Please follow all directions of emergency personnel as we continue to get more updates.’

The Mayor of San Antonio, Julian Castro, posted: ‘Truly devastating. Folks in El Paso should follow guidance from local emergency personnel and monitor updates from the @EPPOLICE. Stay safe.’

Heartbreaking footage showed people running for cover and hiding during the Texas shooting. 

Reports stated that at least 10 people have been killed and 30 are injured. Police said that one male suspect was in custody. 

Tim Ryan – who is also hoping to be elected as the American leader next year – posted on Twitter a message acknowledging O’Rourke’s closeness to the situation: ‘Heart goes out to the people of El Paso and my friend Beto O’Rourke.’

Indiana Democrat Pete Buttigieg – Mayor of Southbend – also shared that he has connections to the same mall in El Paso where the devastation occurred.

He posted online about his history with the area where the shooting occurred and drew attention to the wider gun control debate. 

‘My grandmother used to take me to Cielo Vista Mall,’ he shared with his followers. ‘Now it’s one more mass shooting scene. How many more must grieve before we act? #ElPaso’

California politician Tom Steyer directly pushed for immediate gun control in a tweet.

‘Praying for El Paso. We need gun control NOW,’ he emphasized.

Marianne Williamson was also among the candidates who acknowledged the shooting soon after it occurred.

‘Prayers for the people of El Paso in this agonizing moment,’ she wrote on the micro-blogging website. ‘And prayers for all the rest of us as well, that we might summon up the courage to remove this scourge from our midst. Let us pray and let us act.’

President Donald Trump later joined in with the messages.

He wrote on Twitter: ‘Terrible shootings in El Paso, Texas. Reports are very bad, many killed. Working with State and Local authorities, and Law Enforcement. Spoke to Governor to pledge total support of Federal Government. God be with you all!’
