Biden accompanies wife Jill to an outpatient center in downtown DC for a ‘common medical procedure’

Joe Biden, 78, accompanied first lady Jill Biden, 69 to a doctor’s appointment at a D.C. outpatient center near George Washington Hospital on Wednesday morning.

The Wednesday morning visit comes after a late-night change in the president’s schedule, which is expected to resume their normal after the appointment.

Part of the first lady’s resumed schedule includes a trip to Illinois on Monday.

Presidents go to Walter Reed – located in the D.C. outskirt of Bethesda, Maryland – for medical care. The Military Medical Center has been an evaluation site for presidents and first families for decades.

While first ladies and first families can elect to receive treatment there, it’s not uncommon to seek medical care elsewhere.

The White House did not provide additional details about the first lady’s ‘common medical procedure’ as news emerged of the late change at just after 9:00 p.m. Tuesday night.

‘Tomorrow morning, the President will accompany the First Lady to an appointment for a common medical procedure at an outpatient center in Washington, DC. Afterward, the President and the First Lady will return to the White House to resume their normal schedule,’ a White House official said regarding the change of plans in a statement sent Tuesday evening.

President Biden is expected to speak later on Wednesday about his plan to withdraw United States troops from Afghanistan by September 11 before then visiting Arlington National Cemetery, according to the Associated Press.

Jill’s health has not been a concern since her husband took office – unlike the president who fractured his foot in November, just days after being elected, while playing with his dog, Major.

Joe had to wear a medical boot for several weeks while his hairline fracture on his right foot healed.

He suffered the injury on the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend and visited an orthopedist at Delaware Orthopedic Specialists in Newark, Delaware, the following afternoon ‘out of an abundance of caution’.

He told CNN about the mishap days later, saying he started playing with Major when he stepped out of the shower.

‘The little pup dropped the ball in front of me for me to grab the ball… and I grabbed the ball like this, and he ran,’ Biden said.

‘I’m joking, running after him and grab his tail. And what happened was that he slid on a throw rug.

‘And I tripped on the rug he slid on. That’s what happened. Oh man, that’s not a very exciting story.’

He was cleared by his physician on February 6.

At 78 years old, Biden is the country’s oldest president and last released health records in December 2019, in the weeks preceding the Democrats’ first caucuses and primaries.

Dr. Kevin O’Connor of The George Washington University described Biden as a ‘healthy, vigorous, 77-year-old male, who is fit to successfully execute the duties of the Presidency to include those as Chief Executive, Head of State and Commander in Chief.’

Biden previously suffered two brain aneurysms in the late 1980s, one of which ruptured. He also had deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. More recently, he had his gallbladder removed and was treated for non-cancerous polyps and skin abrasions.

As of the time of the medical report, Biden was taking blood thinners, medication for acid reflux, cholesterol and seasonal allergies.

Last month, he fell up the stairs of Air Force One earlier this month, which White House officials blamed on wind and the stairs being ‘tricky.’

Political detractors, including former President Donald Trump, saw the fall and stoked speculation that something was amiss with his health.

‘There’s something going on, it’s crazy. What’s happening is crazy and you wonder whether or not all of the things that he’s signing, whether or not he understands what he’s signing, because this is worse than Bernie Sanders at his worst point,’ Trump said during an interview on Newsmax.

Trump didn’t have his first official physical until a year into his term.

During the 2016 campaign, Trump dictated a letter to his primary care physician, the late Dr. Harold Bornstein, bragging that he would be the ‘healthiest individual’ ever elected to the presidency.

In January 2018, then White House Dr. Ronny Jackson said Trump was in ‘excellent’ health. He benefited from abstaining from tobacco and alcohol, but had high cholesterol and the doctor spoke to him about his diet, exercising more and weight loss.

Trump was known for his steady diet of Diet Cokes, red meat and ice cream.

Trump critics also believed he could be showing signs of mental unfitness.

The ex-president made a mysterious trip to Walter Reed Medical Center in November 2019, which the White House said was for a ‘quick exam and labs,’ part of that year’s physical.

He returned to Walter Reed in October 2020 during the biggest health crisis he faced during his one-term, Trump’s diagnosis with COVID-19, which dropped his blood oxygen levels to unsafe levels, according to a New York Times report.

In the first case, the White House never released a more specific reason for Trump’s 2019 trip.

In the second, White House officials still haven’t said when the last time was Trump tested negative for COVID-19 before he tested positive.

In the days running up to his COVID diagnosis, Trump participated in the first presidential debate with Biden and attended events and rallies.

The White House isn’t bound to release in-depth health information.
