Biden campaign begs high-rolling donors to dig deep as staffers sleep on couches

Biden campaign begs high-rolling donors to ‘dig deep’ as staffers sleep on couches and his war chest shrinks below Pete Buttigieg’s – but Joe still drops $920,000 on private jets

  • Biden’s campaign manager sent confidential memo to donors this week
  • Pleaded for bundlers to ‘dig deep’ while dismissing rumors campaign is strapped
  • Biden ended the last quarter with just $9 million in cash on hand
  • That’s less than Sanders, Warren, Pete Buttigieg and Kamala Harris
  • Biden staffers are reportedly staying at the homes of volunteers to cut costs
  • Meanwhile donors are ‘furious’ about Biden’s $920,000 spending on private jets

Joe Biden’s campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination is fighting off the impression that it is cash strapped, with staffers sleeping in the homes of volunteers to cut costs even as donors express ‘fury’ over the candidate’s $920,000 spending on private jets.

At the end of September, Biden’s campaign had just $9 million in cash on hand, far less than Senators Bernie Sanders with $33.7 million and Elizabeth Warren with $25.7 million.

Even contenders polling far below Biden had bigger war chests, with South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg at $23.4 million and Senator Kamala Harris at $10.5 million.

This week, Biden’s campaign manager, Greg Schultz, sent out a confidential memo to the campaign’s top bundlers, begging ‘we’re asking you to dig deep,’ according to the New York Times.

At the same time, Schultz sought to allay fears that the campaign is running low on funds, writing in the memo: ‘We will have the resources we need to execute our plan.’

Biden’s money troubles come after the campaign spent $1.9 million more than donors contributed in the last quarter.

His campaign raked in $15.7 million for the quarter, less than Sanders, Warren, and Buttigieg.

Meanwhile, Biden splashed out $17.7 million for the quarter, including $920,000 on private jets, disclosures show.

Terry McAuliffe, the former governor of Virginia and a Democrat fund-raiser, told the Times that donors were ‘furious’ about the jet spending and called the campaign’s overall money situation ‘very alarming’.

McAuliffe’s wife recently invited donors to attend a fund-raiser for Biden at their home in early November.

In his memo to bundlers, Schultz explained that the campaign is trying to cut costs by having staffers sleep at the homes of volunteers ‘whenever it is available.’

Schultz defended Biden’s private jet travel in an interview with the Times, saying that ‘whatever maximizes Joe Biden and voter interaction, the greater chance we have to win.’

Biden’s campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment from DailyMail.com on Saturday.
