A construction worker has been rushed to hospital with horrific burns after hitting a high-voltage cable with a jackhammer, leaving thousands of homes without power.

The tradesman, believed to be in his 30s, was working on a building site in Bidwill, western Sydney, when he hit the 11,000 voltage cable at about 11am on Tuesday.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said the man was unconscious and ‘not in a good way’ when four paramedic teams and the Careflight helicopter arrived at the scene.

The worker suffered serious burns to his face, neck and back and was airlifted to North Shore Hospital, the spokesman said.

The incident caused the Plumpton Zone Substation to crash and left about 13,600 homes and businesses in the Mt Druitt area without power.

Endeavour Energy said power to most homes had been restored by 1pm, but some would have to wait several hours for repairs to be completed.

The energy supplier and SafeWork NSW will conduct a full investigation into the incident.
