Tech billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes, 39, promises his business Atlassian will use 100 per cent clean energy in just six years

  • Atlassian has set a target of 2025 for using 100 per cent renewable energy
  • CEO Mike Cannon-Brookes says bid is reaction to lack of political direction
  • If achieved, firm will be the first Australian company to use 100% clean energy 

Atlassian has vowed to use 100 per cent clean energy by 2025 in an ambitious bid to lead the way in the battle against climate change. 

Chief executive Mike Cannon-Brookes said his software company, which employs 300 people, would aim to be using just renewable energy in six years’ time.

He said the move was a reaction to the lack of political direction on climate change. 

If Mr Cannon-Brookes achieves his goal, Atlassian would be one of the first Australian companies to exclusively use renewable energy.  

‘Being a large and known tech company, we want to make sure we’re driving the Australian angle of (renewables) forward, and we’re trying to do it relatively fast,’ Mr Cannon-Brookes, told the Sydney Morning Herald.

‘We’re trying to set an example and showing what’s possible in our challenging environment.’ 

Atlassian said they hope to achieve this across its ten offices in seven different countries. 

The company said it would also utilise energy saving methods, including installing LED lighting, minimising heating and cooling.

Mr Cannon-Brookes said there would be a ‘modest cost’ involving in moving Atlassian towards the target but said is would be beneficial for the company.

‘We’re big on social responsibility, it will help us attract better employees,’ Mr Cannon-Brookes said.

The CEO stopped short of revealing its power output but  said they were keeping themselves accountable by signing up to the RE100 partnership 

RE100 is an international group of influential businesses commitment of 100 per cent renewable energy by 2050.

The group includes IKEA, Google, eBay, Lego and Bank of Australia.
